This is the third study, and the most comprehensive yet, of the changing leadership profile in U.S. Catholic parishes. Over the last fifteen years, as the number of parishes and resident priest-pastors has decreased, the Catholic population has increased. How have parishes provided quality worship, education, and other services? One part of the answer is that the number of lay parish ministers has grown markedly.

Today parish priests and lay parish ministers are working together, and, as this research shows, two-thirds of all parishes employ at least one lay parish minister. Who are these ministers? Where are they and what do they do? What motivates them? How do they experience parish as a workplace? This book addresses such questions with data from 1990-2005.
